Hickory Dickory Dock – Nursery Rhyme

Hickory Dickory Dock is another favourite in our house. 2yo is obsessed with time and clocks and loves saying ‘tick tock tick tock’ along with this one.

Hickory Dickory Dock – the words:

Hickory dickory dock
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck one
The mouse ran down
Hickory dickory dock.

Here is Kermit the Frog reporting on Seseme Street.
Will the mouse make it on time to run up the clock?

Hickory Dickory Dock dates back to the 18th century and appears to be a nonsense rhyme, it’s intention was to introduce children to telling the time. The first published limerick is thought to be theĀ  Hickory Dickory Dock in 1744.

There appears to be additional verses to this rhyme going through different numbers on the clock. Here is one version:

Hickory dickory dock
The mouse ran up the clock

The clock struck one
The mouse ran down
Hickory dickory dock

Hickory dickory dock
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck two
The mouse said “Boo!”
Hickory dickory dock

Hickory dickory dock
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck three
The mouse said “Whee!”
Hickory dickory dock

Hickory dickory dock
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck four
The mouse said “No more!”
Hickory dickory dock

Hickory dickory dock – Here is the traditional song! (No frogs, cows or horses!)
