Pocket money – how much, when and why!

I remember getting 5p a week pocket money, and my brother getting 10p a week. OK he was older than me, and he didn’t waste his money on rubbish. I am also showing my age here – 5p didn’t really buy you anything, but it was worth an awful lot more than it is today.

Recently the news was keen to tell us poor parents that “Pocket money ‘rose by 11p a week on average’ in 2009″* As if we don’t have to pay for enough things, we now have to give our kids more money as well?   Read more »

Sunshine vitamin – cuts risk of premature births

A new study reveals that women who take Vitamin D when pregnant can cut  the risk of premature birth.

The dramatic findings suggest that “mothers who were given ten times the usual dose of Vitamin D during pregnancy had their risk of premature birth reduced by half and had fewer small babies… No test showed any adverse effect of the large dose of vitamin D.” *

This is great news. If a simple vitamin can help boost the health of babies and prevent premature birth, surely every woman should be encouraged to take it.    Read more »

The Gift of Life

2yo is soon going to be 3yo. I have been thinking of birthday presents to buy. Something noisy, messy, educational? – so many toys to choose from.

Then Sandy (Baby Baby) tagged me with the Gift of Life. It made me stop. It made me think. It made me get back some perspective. I am so lucky. 2yo is happy, healthy and more of a delight than I can even begin to explain. It doesn’t matter what he gets for his birthday – he is so much more fortunate (and so am I) than so many other children and mothers.

This year alone 128000 babies won’t see their 1st birthday because of newborn tetanus.  Read more »

Making life harder for mothers?

According to OFSTED, parents who look after children for more than 2 hours at a time or more than 14 days a year should register as childminders or they are breaking the law.

Women often find childcare is a huge obstacle to returning to work after having children. It is no suprise that friends help each other out. Read more »
