Baby changing bags – How essential are they? A mum’s experience.

When I was pregnant and looking for a pram for the baby, all the sales staff wanted to tell me about the accessories that went with them. I wanted to know about safety, ease of use, how big they were folded down. I didn’t really care less about the changing bag. I did buy one though!changing bag

However, with hindsight, did I really need the expensive changing bag that went with the pram?

In reality, no. Ok so it looks better, all matching, but at the end of the day it is a bag.

What needs to go in a baby changing bag?

These are the things I carried for my baby in his change bag:

  • A change of clothes
  • Nappies
  • Barrier cream
  • Nappy bags and wipes
  • Bottle and formula (if feeding time was going to be when I was out)
  • Spare dummy
  • Antibacterial wipes
  • A bib
  • Change mat

The bag came with a small foldable changing mat. This was really useful, but they can be bought separately from as little as £2.99.
The bag also had an insulated bottle holder – which could have been useful to keep milk or food warm – but it is not something I personally had need for.
The other feature it had was lots of pockets which was useful, but many bags have this feature so was not exclusive to changing bags.
All in all, with hindsight I wouldn’t buy a changing bag. I would use a bag with pockets and big enough to carry everything. I can imagine other Mums would laugh at this. Some would think it crazy, what’s wrong with everything designed to match I can hear you saying. But for me it was money I could have spent on something else.
